New Delhi: Male patterned hair loss, another name for androgenic alopecia, is the most common disease in men. Though typically found with aging, the disease begins at a younger age in many patients, either late in adolescence or early in their twenties. This paper covers the major etiologies of early male-patterned hair loss and looks at some ways to prevent and treat early male-patterned hair loss.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Vidushi Jain, Dermatologist and Medical Head at Dermalinks, shared the solutions and also listed the causes.

Etiology of Male Patterned Hair Loss in Early 20s

  1. Genetics: Genetics has a very significant role in androgenic alopecia. If there is a history of male pattern baldness, you will inherit the sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone, one hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink and weaken with time.
  2. Hormonal Imbalance: DHT causes hair follicles to miniaturize at a more rapid rate, resulting in thinner, weaker hair. In those with predisposed genetic traits, this hypersensitivity to DHT may surface before it would have otherwise.
  3. Stress and Lifestyle:Long-term stress can cause hormonal imbalances, which will further result in faster hair loss. A sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep quality, and an unhealthy diet also weaken hair.
  4. Nutritional Deficiencies: Poor intake of necessary vitamins and minerals like Vitamin D, B12, biotin, iron, and zinc can weaken hair growth and strength, resulting in hair susceptibility to thinning and breakage.
  5. Environmental Factors: Consecutive frequent use of hot styling appliances, chemicals, and other damaging hair treatments may cause damage to the scalp and hair leading to rapid hair loss. Certain medical conditions such as thyroid disease and autoimmune disorders might lead to early hair loss due to hampering the normal cycle of hair.

Male Patterned Hair Loss Remedies

Although early hair loss is distressing, there are many remedies to control and reverse it if taken early:

Medical Treatments

  1. Minoxidil: This FDA-approved topical solution enhances blood flow to the scalp, stimulating hair growth. Consistent application is necessary for effective results.
  2. Finasteride: Oral medication that lowers the levels of DHT stops hair loss and promotes regrowth. Must be used under the guidance of a dermatologist as there are side effects.

Nutritional Support

  1. Diet: Consumer foods rich in proteins, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, D, and B-complex, including eggs, nuts, spinach, and fish to help grow healthy hair.
  2. Supplements: Dietary supplements can be taken in case of a deficiency, but do not start a regimen without first consulting a health care provider.

Lifestyle Changes

  1. Reducing Stress: Practice yoga and meditation or take up any regular exercise that enhances overall well-being.
  2. Good Quality Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep at night that maintains hormonal equilibrium, further promoting hair growth.

Scalp Care

Gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners should be used to maintain a healthy scalp. Chemical products have to be avoided as they often cause skin damage. Scalp massaging with coconut or argan oil daily for increased blood flow and enhancing hair growth naturally

Advanced Dermatological Procedures

  1. PRP Therapy: Plasma-containing platelet injections stimulate the hair follicles that promote hair growth and thickening.
  2. Low-Level Laser Therapy or LLLT: This is a non-invasive treatment where light energy enhances the health of hair follicles.
  3. Hair Transplantation: This is a surgical procedure that finds a way of re-distributing healthy hair follicles to the thinning or balding areas for permanent results.

When to Consult Dermatologist

If you notice excessive hair fall, receding hairline, or thinning at the crown, see a professional doctor immediately. A dermatologist can conduct an in-depth assessment and diagnose the possible cause to develop a specific treatment plan for the disorder to handle it effectively.

The Takeaway

It is a little challenging to cope with male-patterned hair loss in your early 20s; however, it can still be managed with the right approach. Root causes need to be understood and a holistic strategy adopted—combining medical treatments, proper nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments—is required to see hair regain confidence. Here, addressing hair loss is not just a matter of looks; it’s ultimately a matter of quality of life.
