If you're not sure where to find the details on your driver's licence, here's what you need to know and where to go for help.
An Australian driver’s licence has become the de facto photo ID that’s used in everyday situations. This is because Australia doesn’t have a national identity card.
Today, licences and photo cards are hologrammed and contain a photograph, signature, the holder’s address, date of birth and a licence number.
Whether you’re setting up your Renter Resume on Rent.com.au or looking to verify your identity, you may use your licence as one of your Australian identity documents. Your passport, birth certificate and Medicare card are other common forms of identification.
What’s my driver’s licence number?
Your licence number is a 10 to 11-digit unique number and is required across Australia before you are permitted to drive a motor vehicle on the road.
Every state and territory government has its own licensing scheme, so the rules around issuing driver’s licences vary by jurisdiction.
That being said, licenses are generally recognised and valid for use between other states and territories.
What’s a driver’s licence card number?
Your card number is a unique identifier updated each time your licence is re-issued.All active and not expired cards for all states have a card number printed on the card.
It’s important to note that your card number is different to your licence number. Your licence number identifies you as an individual, while your card number is used to verify that this is your latest card.
Until recently, your card number was never used for verification, and will now be used based on each state and territory’s timeline.
The location of your card number field differs between jurisdictions, and for licences issued in the Northern Territory, it can vary depending on the issuing date.
An example of a Victorian Driver’s Licence shows the location of the licence number.
